Assistant Conductor Program

Program Description

The Assistant Conductor program is a one-year paid apprenticeship program for female-identified conductors. The apprenticeship can be extended to two years, at the discretion of the orchestra membership. The program provides a unique opportunity for an emerging conductor early in her career to acquire experience in various aspects of conducting and orchestra management.

The Assistant Conductor will be expected to prepare the orchestra to perform at least one piece per concert under her baton. On a weekly basis, the Assistant Conductor will be given podium time to hone her conducting skills with the orchestra, receive mentoring and guidance from the Conductor, and aid in any musical preparations as needed. In addition, she will serve as the Music Director for the CWO end-of-year Chamber Music Soiree.

Assistant Conductors serve from September through August. The best time to inquire for openings is in April to May, although we will continue to take inquiries through August.

Selection Process

Prospective assistant conductors will be asked to prepare a ~10 minute piece to audition with the orchestra during the first or second rehearsal of the season (late August, early September). There will also be a brief interview with select musician members of the CWO Board of Directors. Selection of a candidate for the assistant conductor program shall be up to a vote by the orchestra membership.
