CWO is excited to announce the commissioning of three new works by three gifted composers. A new work will be featured at each of our three concerts during the 2009-2010 season in celebration of our 25th anniversary season. These three world premieres will be recorded and included on CWO’s first CD, and will be published by each of the composers for future performances.

An important part of CWO’s mission is to promote the recognition and performance of music by women composers. The commission of a full orchestral work is a rare and fabulous opportunity for both the composer and orchestra. The composer works directly with the orchestra and conductor to write to that group's strengths and sensibilities.

Commissioning new works is an expensive project, but vital to the mission of CWO to provide opportunities for women composers. We encourage your financial support of CWO in our ambitious musical plans for the 25th Anniversary Season. Underwriters are sought for the commissioning project and also for the CD production. The total amount sought is $11,000. Contributors will be acknowledged in printed materials (including the CD insert) and on the CWO website during the 25th Season.

CWO welcomes contributions of any amount, using either of the following two options:
  • To donate online, please click on this PayPal Donate button.
  • To mail us a donation, please fill out and mail this donation form. (Using this mail-in form, CWO is only able to accept checks at this time.)
CWO is a 501c3 non-profit organization in the state of California. As such, donations are tax deductible to the full extent of the law.

CWO thanks you for your support!

We are pleased to announce the three composers:
Martha Stoddard
Martha Stoddard, is an up and coming composer on the Bay Area New Music scene. She will compose a children's piece for our fall 2009 family concert based on American folk songs. Oddly, women composers are underrepresented in orchestral literature written for children.

Mary Watkins is well known as a pianist and composer in the Bay Area and nationally. She will compose a work for our winter concert in February 2010. Trained in both jazz and classical traditions, she often incorporates various styles of music into her work. She has composed for symphony orchestra, chamber and jazz ensembles, film and theater.

Hilary Tann
Hilary Tann, an internationally recognized Welsh-born composer, creates music that is influenced by her love of Wales, her strong identification with the natural world and a deep interest in the traditional music of Japan. She will write a piece that will be featured in our final gala concert on Saturday May 15, 2010 that will include guest appearances by founding CWO conductor Nan Washburn and longtime CWO conductor Ann Krinitsky.
